After qualifing in one of the four branches of nursing - adult, child, learning disability or mental health - you'll find that there is further opportunity to progress your career and to specialise. Many of these opportunities will require experience and/or further training.
Community or acute?
Working in the community settings such as a GP practice, clinic, school, walk-in centre or prison is a growing area. However, there will always be opportunities working in acute hospital settings. For example, you could specialise in areas such as outpatients, accident and emergency, operating theatres, neonatal care or neurology.

There are also opportunities to work for NHS Blood and Transplant and other special health authorities.

Outside of the NHS, opportunities exist within the independent and charitable sectors, including private hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support. Nurses are also in high-demand from the armed forces.
